2024 In Review: Quotes

It's day 2 of the new year! And you know what that means: well, actually, you probably don't, because I haven't done this in over a decade! I'll tell you what it means, though: it means I get to talk about the top quotes of the last year!

I started up the quotes database again in last 2023, and it's exploded quite a bit, with ~250 quotes submitted in the modern era! Most of them were from conversations between 2019 and 2023 that I submitted all at once when reopening the quotes database, but we've still had an average of 8 new quotes a month this year, which I think is pretty fun!

Now, even though the database has been back up since 2023, I didn't actually do a quote review last year. So, I think what I'll do today is list the top ten quotes of the modern era, including those submitted both in 2023 and in 2024. As a note: there are a number of quotes that are tied at 2 upvotes, so I'm going to pick my four favorite among them to occupy the bottom spots of this list. So, without any further ado:

  1. #744 - Murphy's Brick
  2. #712 - Ain't Gotta Please No Man
  3. #716 - Teenage Dream
  4. #760 - Testimonial
  5. #748 - Professional Gay Boy
  6. #727 - Packing
  7. #692 - That's Just A Plate
  8. #674 - McDonald's Screen
  9. #701 - Touhou

And finally, coming in as the most popular quote in the modern era so far, with a stunning five votes, we have:

  1. #697 - Even War?

I think this has been a pretty funny year, in terms of quotes! I'm looking forward to another year of friendly banter and ridiculous autocorrects. Remember that you're free to submit a quote if you think it would fit in with the database (i.e. involves people I know)! And don't forget to upvote quotes that you like!

Also, in case you're curious about the old era: the most popular quote in the database has not changed since I last did this roundup, 13 years ago. To be honest, I don't really trust any of the rankings from the old era because bots were just clicking on those links all day long. Regardless, the top remains tied between two quotes, both with 31 points: #334 - Have You Got It In You, and #232 - Blank, otherwise known as the quote that got submitted before I started validating that the quote body wasn't blank.
